Pengertian Pendidikan Dasar

Pendidikan dasar adalah jenjang pendidikan awal selama 9 (sembilan) tahun pertama masa sekolah anak-anak. Pendidikan dasar menjadi dasar bagi jenjang pendidikan menengah. Periode pendidikan dasar ini adalah selama 6 tahun. Di akhir masa pendidikan dasar, para siswa diharuskan mengikuti dan lulus dari Ujian Nasional (UN). Kelulusan UN menjadi syarat untuk dapat melanjutkan pendidikannya ke tingkat selanjutnya (SMP/MTs).

Pendidikan dasar adalah jenjang paling dasar pada pendidikan di Indonesia. Pendidikan dasar terdiri dari sekolah dasar (atau sederajat) selama 6 tahun dan sekolah menengah pertama (atau sederajat) 3 tahun.

Pendidikan dasar diselenggarakan oleh pemerintah maupun swasta. Sejak diberlakukannya otonomi daerah pada tahun 2001, pengelolaan pendidikan dasar negeri di Indonesia yang sebelumnya berada di bawah Kementerian Pendidikan Nasional, kini menjadi tanggung jawab Pemerintah Daerah Kabupaten/Kota. Sedangkan Kementerian Pendidikan Nasional hanya berperan sebagai regulator dalam bidang standar nasional pendidikan. Secara struktural, sekolah dasar negeri merupakan unit pelaksana teknis dinas pendidikan kabupaten/kota.

Dalam Undang-undang Sistem Pendidikan Nasional (UU Nomor 20 Tahun 2001) Pasal 17 mendefinisikan pendidikan dasar sebagai berikut:

(1) Pendidikan dasar merupakan jenjang pendidikan yang melandasi jenjang pendidikan menengah.

(2) Pendidikan dasar berbentuk sekolah dasar (SD) dan madrasah ibtidaiyah (MI) atau bentuk lain yang sederajat serta sekolah menengah pertama (SMP) dan madrasah tsanawiyah (MTs), atau bentuk lain yang sederajat.
